CLASSIFICATION 2017/2018: ICE DANCE BASIC NOVICE (BEGINNER NOVICE) LEVEL According to ISU Communication No. 2024, 2076, 2086, 2094 Age: By the start of the season, i.e. by July 1, the age of the competitors must not have exceeded fifteen (15) years for girls and seventeen (17) years for boys. Compulsory dances: # 1 Fourteen Step and # 4 European Waltz In the 2017/2018 season, pairs may perform the Fourteen Step to music of their own choice. The rhythm and tempo of the music must match the requirements of the given dance (see ISU Handbook Ice Dance 2003) +/- 2 beats per minute. Free Dance: Duration 2.00 +/- 10 seconds A well-balanced program must include a) Lifts: not more than one (1) Short Lift b) One (1) step sequence in dance holds on a straight line (center line or diagonal) or curve (circle or serpentine). c) One Twizzle set d) One "spinning movement" or "twizzling movement". The dance spin is not included in the list of compulsory elements. If a pair performs at least a two-turn movement together around a common axis in any dance hold on one foot or two feet, it will be counted as a "spinning movement". The dance pair uses this element/movement as a choreographic expression tool. The judging panel will not count this element/movement as one of the required stops. Level of Difficulty Explanation For the free dance of the Basic Novice level, the highest level of difficulty for all compulsory elements is level 2.
